On our day at sea, from Olbia to Brindisi, we passed through the straits of Messina. Sicily is on our right, southern Italy on our left. Unfortunately, Mt Aetna is in the clouds, but on the ship it is sunny and balmy Med weather. We hear that Homer, in the Odyessy, used the straits as a model for his phrase, “between a rock and a hard place.” Our ship's captain tells us that the Italian pilot boat drivers like to go really fast.
